Point to Point Networks
WHAT IS IT?
PTP = "Point to Point" Network
PTMP = "Point to Multi Point" Network
If a network connection is required to connect multiple locations that are too far apart for a physical cable (a span of 300′ or more), a "Point to Point" Network (or "Wireless Bridge) can be used. Point to Point links act as a network cable would, connecting buildings at distances under a mile and allowing them to share a private or public network. Point to Multi Point links can connect multiple commercial buildings, barns, or other outbuildings on your yard, details below.
PTP: Can it be shared with a neighbour?
A wireless Point to Point link can be used to share an existing Swift connection with a neighbouring household. This option is most often used in areas where one household has an existing Swift connection using a bracketed tower or popup mast and chooses to share that connection, eliminating the need to install their own bracketed tower or pop up mast. A switch would be installed in the main hosting household that will split the connections to allow for separate plans and accounts, as well as ensure that the two households do not affect each other’s speeds!
There are a few things to consider regarding a PTP with a neighbour:
- A clear line of sight to the hosting neighbour’s household is still required to guarantee a great connection. This means height may still be required on the secondary household.
- A good relationship with your neighbour is key. Should your wireless Point to Point link ever go offline or experience issues, the hosting household may need to assist in troubleshooting! This can often cause for issues when the hosts are not around and access to their household is not possible…
- Should your neighbour ever sell their home you may be required to maintain this relationship with the new homeowner.
Things to be aware of when considering a PTP with a neighbour:
- Some tower sites cannot provide enough speed for two homes to pull top Swift plans if sharing equipment. Swift staff will walk through this with you on a case by case basis.
- Please be aware that sharing a connection with your neighbour is an agreement made between the homeowners and does not involve Swift. Swift will not force a homeowner to take part in hosting a wireless Point to Point link if they do not wish to.
- Any agreements made in sharing costs is entirely between the homeowners and must be done privately.
- A homeowner may choose to stop hosting the Point to Point connection if they wish, Swift will not mediate in this process.
PTMP: Ag Specific PTP/PTMP Benefits
- Connecting all buildings on a farm allows for computers to be networked across the yard, reports to be printed across the yard, and file sharing across the yard.
- Allows IP Cameras to be installed in all facilities and recorded on a single NVR including:
- Calving Barns
- Driveways onto the Farm Site
- Milk Houses
- Fuel Tanks
- Maintenance and Tools Shops
- Parlors or Robot Areas
- Multiple houses on same farmyard can share services.
Point to Point Pricing
The cost of a Point to Point link is based on each connection point, and includes the labour, hardware, and radio cost for installation. This per-end pricing allows you to connect multiple locations if desired, with the most common connection being two buildings (2 end points). This is a one-time installation fee and all equipment would be owned by you, no monthly rental fee!
Standard Per Endpoint - $750

Large PTMP Networks
PTMP stands for Point to Multi Point, referring to a Wireless Bridge network with 3 or more endpoints. Often a better design for multiple buildings is to centralize the network to a main office and a single Access Point with 360* range.
If installing a PTP/PTMP network while installing more than 4 IP Cameras, upgrading PTP/PTMP speeds is required to ensure the sustained bandwidth of the camera footage functions as intended. Visit the IP Cameras Page for additional info!
